via  Washington’s blog / Aug. 20, 2013 / Radiation levels will concentrate in pockets in Baja California and other West Coast locations.

While many people assume that the ocean will dilute the Fukushima radiation, a previously-secret 1955 U.S. government report concluded that the ocean may not adequately dilute radiation from nuclear accidents, and there could be “pockets” and “streams” of highly-concentrated radiation.

The University of Hawaii’s International Pacific Research Center created a graphic showing the projected dispersion of debris from Japan:

Last year, scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and 3 scientists from the GEOMAR Research Center for Marine Geosciences showed that radiation on the West Coast of North America could end up being 10 times higher than in Japan:

After 10 years the concentrations become nearly homogeneous over the whole Pacific, with higher values in the east, extending along the North American coast with a maximum (~1 × 10−4) off Baja California.

With caution given to the various idealizations (unknown actual oceanic state during release, unknown release area, no biological effects included, see section 3.4), the following conclusions may be drawn. (i) Dilution due to swift horizontal and vertical dispersion in the vicinity of the energetic Kuroshio regime leads to a rapid decrease of radioactivity levels during the first 2 years, with a decline of near-surface peak concentrations to values around 10 Bq m−3 (based on a total input of 10 PBq). The strong lateral dispersion, related to the vigorous eddy fields in the mid-latitude western Pacific, appears significantly under-estimated in the non-eddying (0.5°) model version. (ii) The subsequent pace of dilution is strongly reduced, owing to the eastward advection of the main tracer cloud towards the much less energetic areas of the central and eastern North Pacific. (iii) The magnitude of additional peak radioactivity should drop to values comparable to the pre-Fukushima levels after 6–9 years (i.e. total peak concentrations would then have declined below twice pre-Fukushima levels). (iv) By then the tracer cloud will span almost the entire North Pacific, with peak concentrations off the North American coast an order-of-magnitude higher than in the western Pacific.

  1. Come to my site, I have a proposal to this:
See in the playlist the one that has this name:
    Fukushima, el Apocalipsis Radioactivo”.

  2. Well, these are USmade, very insufficient protected, nuclear reactors.. So to get some of your stupidity on your own plate in a certain way can be seen as just.

    • Oh yes Peter. Thank you for justifying the ‘punishment’ on the US because possibly some US company made these reactors. We should all be punished here in the US because of this American company. Thank you for your empathy. And btw the stupidity of putting the reactors on the ocean isn’t stupid to you I guess, it’s only just, that the whole ocean, our ecosystem and innocent people should be affected by this.
      Thanks again Peter.

  3. Excuse me but I believe (~1 × 10−4) means 1 times ten to the fourth power which is 10,000 and not “10”. If the scientist meant to write “10” the scientist would not write (~1 × 10−4).

    • ” Excuse me but I believe (~1 × 10−4) means 1 times ten to the fourth power which is 10,000 and not “10″. ”

      1 x 10-4 is equal to 0.0001

The minus sign in front of the four essentially means divide by ten instead of multiply.

  4. Here’s the actual quote from the abstract of the actual paper.

” Tentatively assuming a value of 10 PBq for the net 137Cs input during the first weeks after the Fukushima incident, the simulation suggests a rapid dilution of peak radioactivity values to about 10 Bq m−3 during the first two years, followed by a gradual decline to 1–2 Bq m−3 over the next 4–7 years. The total peak radioactivity levels would then still be about twice the pre-Fukushima values. ”

Rapid dilution to 0.01 Bq/liter decreasing to 0.001 Bq/liter after about 10 years which would be about double what was already there from above ground nuclear testing.

Not the end of the world. Sorry.

    • Another troll – SHAME on you 🙁

  5. Predictions are just that. Like trying to predict the stock market will go up or down tomorrow. These numbers are based upon phony numbers given to the public. The model is based on old information. The pacific ocean is dying and you are trying to convince us with numbers that everything will be just fine? I say bullshit. Any living organism does not respond well to radiation. Chemo therapy is liquid draino. And when you ask any radiologist if they where diagnosed with cancer if they would undergo chemo therapy, the answer is NO

    • Predictions can be nearly certain, like “the sun will rise in the east tomorrow” to almost completely unknown, like “next weeks lottery numbers.”

The total inventory of cesium-137 at fukushima is 5e18 Becquerels. The volume of the ocean is 1.8e21 liters. So if everything at fukushima went into the ocean you would have at most 0.003 Bq/L once it was totally mixed in. Barely enough to be noticed, much less create global nuclear doom. Never fear, life will go on.

The pacific ocean is dying because it’s being overfished and polluted with chemicals and plastic. If Fukushima contamination stopped humans from fishing the pacific it would be the best thing to ever happen to it.

      • Still trolling – more shame on you 🙁

        • Sorry to inject a little reality into your fantasies of global nuclear doom.

I’ll try to be better behaved in the future and keep the reality to a minimum.

  6. Not true .The Russia’s discovered way back in the 1950s that even th minutiest of radiation kills fish eggs and stored their cooling effluent on land. No eggs, no more fish. there is no such thing as over fishing. Fish have been around a lot longer than humans , start have 100s to 1000s of babiest with in one year. Human females have an average 2.5 children in a life time, and do not start to an average age of 18. Overfishing is one of those: you can fool all of the people all of the time things; that said the chemical condition of the water is as much to blame as radiation. Off the coast of Canada the oil and gas industry is venting their toxic produced water directly to the ocean. Perhaps they are doing that workd wide?

  7. This can not be compare to the Fifties. A bomb did not go off everyday. Yet every day dumping of radiation water is going on. What I like to know is this water is killing tiny life forms that make our air the level safe to live with? Clearly food is being destroyed And our health endanger. And all island nation have trouble. Now we need to know if there will be enough air for this planet to live with.

  8. This sucks I am in the vally and I have heard it could spread and I want to know if this is true if so please work harder you know what just work harder I am scared and I don’t know what to do my brother(8) and sister(4) are scared to death please help them live and are prayers are with everyone. ~nancy(13)

  9. NANCY, the best course for you and your family is to stop frequenting alarmist quack websites like this one. If you want facts and rigorous scientific research and judgement, try this instead:

  10. @oceans_away: Not covered by mainstream media. Leuren Moret: USA, UK Monarchy behind Fukushima radiation genocide via @youtube

  11. this is an ongoing disaster, is it 400+ Tones of seawater flushed through the plant making it highly radioactive and out to sea every hour? All your predictions suggest the radioactivity stops at some point and then its how many years to almost back to the same levels….It is a highly radioactive machine full on open to the environment that sustains us and they don’t even know where the cores really are…The madness of FOOLS!
    I have an IDEA!
Nuke the whole Plant and melt it back into the magma under Japan, or watch world wide death rates soar, ‘They’ will tell you it’s because of better science, early diagnosis is up be cause our technology is so great!
