storagetanksvia NHK World / June 6, 2014 / The operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says more than 3 tons of radioactive water may have leaked from barriers surrounding storage tanks.

Tokyo Electric Power Company made the announcement on Friday following the discovery of water leaking around 2 of its storage tanks on the hillside earlier this week.

The tanks contain rainwater with radiation levels above government-set standards.

TEPCO found that regular patrols have not been conducted in the area near the tanks since March, and that the leakage may have begun then.

The company also determined that a drain valve for barriers surrounding the tanks had accidentally been left open.

It detected higher levels of radiation around the area than at other locations in the complex.

TEPCO has concluded that up to 3.4 tons of contaminated water may have leaked outside the barriers since March. The company continues to collect soil samples in the area.

TEPCO officials say regular patrols did not cover the area where only smaller tanks for rainwater are located. They add that they will thoroughly check for other facilities that may have been left unattended.

  1. wow.at least tepco is being honest about the leaked rain water.and sending people to try to clean it up.
it makes me wonder if Canada or the u.s will be as honest to report any accidents that occurs with there own reactors.Time will tell.

  2. The cores.
Where are these melted cores now?

    • No one knows… at least no one is telling if they do…. this does not bode well. Fact is no one can get anywhere near the reactors to check and there is no “technology” to ascertain where they are; most likely is that the cores from reactors 1, 2 & 3 have melted through (ie: China Syndrome”). A “Worst case scenario”. Even if one or more are still “contained… for how long? No one knows. And if there has been melt-throughs and even if they could be found… then what? There’s no way to “put them back”. This is completely unprecedented and certainly not good.

NPPs are so deadly and the people who support them are so fukin’ stupid it beggars belief 🙁

  3. This is really dangerous! It is a pity that this is happening in this region! Storage Stratford Ltd.
