fuku-recentvia CounterPunch.org / September 30, 2015 / The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant No. 2 nuclear reactor fuel is missing from the core containment vessel. (Source: Up to 100% of No. 2 Reactor Fuel May Have Melted, NHK World News, Sept. 25, 2015.)

Where did it go? Nobody knows.

Not only that but the “learning curve” for a nuclear meltdown is as fresh as the event itself because “the world has never seen anything like this,” never.

Utilizing cosmic ray muon radiography with nuclear emulsion, researchers from Nagoya University peered inside the reactors at Fukushima. The nuclear fuel in reactor core No. 5 was clearly visible via the muon process. However, at No. 2 reactor, which released a very large amount of radioactive substances coincident with the 2011 explosion, little, if any, signs of nuclear fuel appear in the containment vessel. A serious meltdown is underway.

“The researchers say further analyses are needed to determine whether molten fuel penetrated the reactor and fell down,” Ibid. In short, researchers do not yet know if the molten hot stuff has penetrated the steel/concrete base beyond the containment vessel, thus entering Mother Earth.

The Nagoya University research team, in coordination with Toshiba Corporation, reported their findings at a meeting of the Physical Society of Japan on Sept. 26th.

Thus, therefore, and furthermore, it is advisable to review what’s at stake:
“High-level nuclear waste is almost unimaginably poisonous. Take for example cesium-137, with a half-life of 30 years, which makes up the largest fraction of long-lived radionuclides residing in spent nuclear fuel. One gram of radioactive cesium-137 (about half the size of a dime) contains 88 Curies of radioactivity. 104 Curies of radioactive cesium-137, spread evenly over one square mile of land, will make it uninhabitable for more than a century,” Comments on Draft of Nuclear Waste Administration Act of 2013, Physicians for Social Responsibility, May 23, 2013.

As for example, there are 1,090 square miles of land surrounding the destroyed Chernobyl reactor that Ukraine classifies as an uninhabitable radioactive exclusion zone because radioactive fallout left more than 104 Curies of cesium- 137 per square mile on the land that makes up the zone. Scientists believe it will be 180 to 320 years before Cesium-137 around Chernobyl disappears from the environment.

  1. And yet, you wouldn’t even know this was an ongoing event if you only paid attention to the television news. Instead of a call to arms for all, only fair since everyone has a stake in this debacle, we just pretend it never happened. No species has ever been as stupid as the human species.

    • What is a meltdown?
A meltdown is when cooling systems fail and the heat from the nuclear reaction keeps the fuel sufficiently hot that it melts through its supporting structure (fuel cladding, moderator, etc). To maintain a nuclear reaction requires a quite specific geometry. As the fuel moves due to the melting it will tend to spread out and the chain reaction will stop. This is the purpose of the dish like core catcher under the pressure vessel. When the chain reaction stops there is still a large amount of heat from the decay of various radioactive isotopes but this drops off fairly rapidly. More than 4 years after the event the core material will be fairly cool and stable, all the short lived isotopes will have decayed away so this is not really an ongoing event, a meltdown happened, but it is not still happening as mentioned above.
The comment regarding 104 Curies of cesium- 137 per square mile making an area uninhabitable does not appear to be the case. Animal life seems to be doing well around Chernobyl.

      Best regards

      • The wildlife is flourishing because humans are no longer dominating the landscape. Their mere presence of number does not indicate health. Many of the species have significantly reduced life expectancies and studies show they have chromosome abnormalities. The large catfish population and their large size is due to a lack of fishing and that no longer reduces the population. The large sized fish do not mean the population is unaffected. Many tree species have bizarre mutations and do not grow in the same way their counterparts in other areas grow. They have unusual and bizarre shapes and growth patterns. Again, presence does not indicate health.

      • Animal life doing well? Perhaps you should expand your reading. Hazardous radionuclides such as iodine-131, caesium 137, and other isotopes are currently being released in the sea and air around Fukushima After they enter the body, these elements, internal emitters ,migrate to specific organs such as the thyroid, liver, bone, and brain, where they continuously irradiate small volumes of cells with high doses of alpha, beta and/or gamma radiation, and over many years, can induce uncontrolled cell replication. Further, many of the nuclides remain radioactive in the environment for generations, and ultimately will cause increased incidences of cancer and genetic diseases over time.

    • You hit the nail right on the head. And in the interim, radioactive material is seeping into the Pacific Ocean on a daily basis. This is not just a Japanese problem, but a world problem. They’ll wait until irreparable damage is done before they react. Really sad state of affairs.

    • Right you are Jim! If the American People were told the truth, (it they’d even BELIEVE it) we’d be in the streets protesting. We are hopelessly naive. Not only do we NOT know, we don’t want to know.

    • That last sentence might be the most ignorant thing ive heard. Did i miss the other species that went to the moon? Or the one that has gone to space, period? Well dolphins, obviously. Maybe mice, because well, 42. Youre right, i wish our technology and ability to think didnt fall in a sad last behind the whole of the animal kingdom. Its only a matter of time before the animal’s population becomes too much to sustain itself on this meager planet we lowly “humans” call earth. They will slowly take over land that used to be ours with their advanced medical technology and giant skyscrapers. Lo, if only we had been the species to evolve into the advanced earth changing civilization that is the lions; maybe, just maybe, we could last another few centuries before they wipe us from the earth with their bombs. Its not that we as humans are simply stupid, its greed on part of our news networks. Not the first or last time a big story got forgotten about by the news.

  2. Roger…without knowing the location and geometry of the fuel, it is impossible to say what is going on. This article indicates that we do not know the location (and therefore geometry) of the fuel. It could still be hot enough to be causing damage. This is one of the fears of the “elephants foot” in Chernobyl, that it’s geometry could become favorable for sustained chain reactions (and subsequently heating up).

Animals around Chernobyl seem to be doing fine, but that is because they do not have lifespans that are long enough to observe the long term effects of exposure to the elevated background radiation.

  3. Bait and switch good plan to avoid. Accountability
    Whose who .?

  4. The flora and fauna are present in greater numbers, but are not healthy. Shorter lifespans, chromosomal abnormalities, bizarre growth patterns of trees, smaller brain capacity of birds and a lack of microorganism that decompose organic matter:

  5. Has anyone heard of the roy process a safe way to transmute all nuclear waste into harmless isotopes.
back in the 1960’s we begged, pleaded, tries to show the powers that run everything there were so many better and safe alternatives.
GE, better life thru science designed these aging and defunded plants! thanks for killing now 2/3 orf all life forms on the planet

    • There was a petition asking to allow investigating the process further.
Got 32 signers on change.org – a petition where the physics isn’t at least basically described
about 5000 views on Youtube, where the process is not explained -but a great deal is made of this Roy being a child prodigy. -Thx for wasting my time.
No Wikipedia entry. No papers from Radhan Roy anywhere. No Radham Roy at ASU. Nobody, except some non physicists and daydreamers, mentioning the process. Last not least: Nowhere (=NOWHERE) any viable description of the process. Thx for wasting my time.

      • great! now i dont have do investigate it further. thank you for sharing 🙂

      • There is a known process to remove radiation from people, it’s been used in the USA before after a lab accident, but its remained confidential. There are survivors around today that are familiar with it.
There may also be a version for land cleaning, but not sure how cost effective.

    • It this “Roy Process” a PROVEN technology? If it sounds too good to be true……….

  6. The benefits of nuclear energy are many but so are the risks.
We all should be doing everything possible to disarm the thousands of nuclear bombs hanging over our heads. Not doing so is the ultimate arrogance and may very well lead to our destruction.

    • We need to undo all nuclear munitions and nuclear power plants, that isn’t the only catastrophic earthquake we will ever incur, also not the last tidal wave either, we need to look to our future!

  7. A leading Japanese journalist Accuses Israel of Fukushima Sabotage. He contends that Israeli intelligence sabotaged the reactor in retaliation for Japan’s support of an independent Palestinian state. – See more at: http://americanfreepress.net/japanese-journalist-accuses-israel-of-fukushima-sabotage/#sthash.daXJWaST.dpuf

  8. I am not a nuclear scientist. I am not an engineer. I am not a nuclear engineer. I make no claims or predictions concerning what is going to occur at Fukushima. But, it is obvious that TEPCO, the Japanese banks and the Japanese government are covering up what is really happening. It has been FOUR YEARS….and the radioactive pollution continues.

There is equally massive collusion between the Japanese government and other governments with a huge stake in the global nuclear power industry.
This state of affairs is going to continue until large sections of the Japanese population become sick and many die. It will continue until American scientist on the American west coast stop lying about the true condition of the Pacific Ocean and the elevated levels of atmospheric radiation in the United States. Canada is equally complicit.

So, this is more than a tragedy; it is an enormous international cover up.

The other day, I asked a Korean friend of mine what would happen if the Japanese government could no longer keep the lid on this situation and panic among the Japanese population ensued and many Japanese citizens began to leave (evacuate). How would Korea react? Would Korea accept millions of Japanese from Tokyo and outlying prefectures?
    My friend said, “no”.
    How about China?
My friend said he “doubted it”.

People keep talking about this problem as if it is a parlor game, or some kind of hellish reality show; as if there is no REAL stake in it for themselves.
    My friends…..think again.

    • You mean other than (1) you parents failing to use birth control when they conceived you and (2) your mother failing to elect her right to chose after she became pregnant, right?

  9. Cover up or not, we are screwed. There is 245 TONS of reactor fuel MISSING.
    From the article:
High-level nuclear waste is almost unimaginably poisonous. Take for example cesium-137, with a half-life of 30 years, which makes up the largest fraction of long-lived radionuclides residing in spent nuclear fuel. One gram of radioactive cesium-137 (about half the size of a dime) contains 88 Curies of radioactivity. 104 Curies of radioactive cesium-137, spread evenly over one square mile of land, will make it uninhabitable for more than a century,” Comments on Draft of Nuclear Waste Administration Act of 2013, Physicians for Social Responsibility, May 23, 20

So The continents float on top of water one of the fuel hits the water and the Gulfstream and is dispersed throughout the whole world and the ecosystem is there any possibility that the ocean could dilute it to a point of minimal impact? I don’t think so but am asking for a scientific answer.

  10. So there are 11106070554493645000 tons of water on earth, what is the bottom line?

  11. I remember watching the move, “On the Beach” filmed in 1959, as a young girl. It made a huge impact on me. Maybe if every single person saw this movie before nuclear power was fully embraced we wouldn’t be in the situation we are now in. The movie had the premise correct, but the delivery of the radiation wrong. We really cannot survive if our oceans die.

Because to do something, to raise the alarm and take action, would be extra-ordinarily expensive. Billions or hundreds of Billions of Dollars.
For most it is better to pretend you can’t see it.
At this time if you watch closely you see the true state of mankind. They are babies, irresponsible, money-crazy, excited, children. This is the state of the world leaders that make such a fuss of their meetings at the UN, G20, and all that. Those men and women who meet there, the elders of our society, are actually inside just like little children.
To see it clearly, to actually see what they are … and what our species is, that gives you clarity.
I am afraid all the humans on this planet are going to die, that is life.
I suggest you realise how hopeless this species is. A species as unintelligent and confused as ours should never have this kind of technology. It will only yield great harm. And more is on its way, much much more, with far greater pressure.
What can be the result ?
There is only one outcome for this species.
Screaming at people to “do something” does not change the childish level of consciousness that they are . It is like screaming at babies who have had too much candy. They cannot do anything.
Meditate, and at least you will reach some kind of peace.

  13. To Diego’s last comment. I wouldn’t say that there is any criminality to this. Tepco didn’t ask for a tsunami, but they got one. However, being located on the “ring of fire area” in the pacific, the real crime is that their government, scientists, engineering specialists and vendors who delivered these units, didn’t plan for a worse case scenario, considering where they are seismically and geographically located.
Here in Canada, and our neighbours to the south in the USA, the emphasis is on a very rigorous scrutiny whereby any nuclear facility is built within a seismically active area, and for good reason.
In Canada, the risk is very low. The USA has a few to be concerned about, but the risks have been highly mitigated.
If there is any real crime here, it’s that a worst case scenario wasn’t planned for. Japan’s expedited acquisition of non fossil fuel energy to provide an island nation in a earthquake region without putting extra safeguards in place for that reason alone, that’s the crime.
It’s unfortunate, but they will endeavour to clean the problem up and will make nuclear power production even safer for the rest of the world as we look on and assist, and learn from the mistakes that were made just like in any life scenario.
Just don’t eat the pacific salmon for about 50 years. Radioactive isotopes and wine don’t go well.

  14. I can’t belive this is not a main story on the news. Sure looks like this is being covered up. We may never know the whole truth about how bad this is going to get. When will mankind ever start using some common sence?

  15. The world has opened the box … I guarantee you this is only going to get worse… we have soo many other nuclear plants in operation. Once the panic sets in and reality hits home .. there won’t be anyone around to tend to the other plants.. hence the dominoes fall.. all these rich careless people will doom all of us.. greed .. enjoy it . Here’s a footprint that will certainly be found by the predecessors

  16. Is the Fukushima disaster abating, or is it getting worse and worse? I have a theory of how to reverse all the Fukushima damage in three or four months for a monetary investment of $5.0 million to Electrino Group Inc. (See Email address.) It would occur by reversing the order to disorder arrow in the second law of thermodynamics in a footprint large enough to contain the disaster area. (See Rejuvenating the sun and earth through science, by Gordon L. Ziegler, amazon.com.).

  17. The last I heard, Japan has spent $58 billion on the Fukushima disaster. For only $5.0 million we could undo the whole disaster! But it is extremely difficult to try to build the necessary Refresher equipment without the money. Can you advance us the necessary $5.0 million? We will repay you ten fold when the Refresher is operating.

    Sincerely yours,

Gordon L. Ziegler, CEO Electrino Group Inc

  18. These facts on the radionuclide ce-137 are all true. Yet, not one article giving any report about pu=239, ur-238 melting ur-234contaminations hot-spots and multiple other, has included the “non-implementation” of PHYTOREMEDIATIONS activity!

    How come?
